Stories." He was questioned by the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1950 and thrown in
jail for three months because he would not provide the names of contributors to a hospital with which he
had been associated during the Spanish Civil War. Blacklisted upon his release, Fast started his own
publishing company, the Blue Heron Press. In 1952, he ran for Congress on the American Labor Party ticket,
and was awarded the Stalin Peace Prize in 1954.
As one of the most important American writers of the 20th Century, he has never been given
full credit for his contribution to the essential tales of American culture, the American Revolution and
immigrant acculturation. He has enjoyed wide popularity for his writing, however, and his novels have sold
close to 80 million copies. Many of his works were published to considerable acclaim and are still widely
assigned as texts in high schools and universities. Among them are The Last Frontier (1941),
The Unvanquished (1942), Freedom Road (1944) and April Morning
(1961). In 1986, he adapted his novel, Citizen Tom Paine (1943), into a two act play. Stanley
