JOSEPH ADLER (Director/Producing Artistic Director) begins his fourth season as Artistic Director of GableStage with this production. Previously, he directed on many local stages, including Coconut Grove Playhouse, New Theatre, Area Stage, Hollywood Boulevard Theatre, Players Theatre, Ruth Foreman Theatre, Florida Shakespeare Theatre, City Theatre (Summer Shorts), Hollywood Playhouse and Shores Performing Arts. At GableStage he directed Skylight, Of Mice and Men, Full Gallop, Psychopathia Sexualis, Closer, Killer Joe, This is Our Youth, Arms and the Man, Side Man, Popcorn, Tape, The Real Thing, Adam Baum and the Jew Movie, Citizen Tom Paine, The Blue Room, Mindgame and Boy Gets Girl. Active in South Florida's film and theatre community for many years, Adler has directed hundreds of innovative television commercials and industrial films. His work has won many awards, including the Clio. Other directorial credits include several independent feature films, a video version of the Broadway hit comedy "Doubles", and a cable TV series. He has received ten nominations (most recently for Closer, Killer Joe an Popcorn at GableStage), and twice won the Carbonell Award for Best Director. He also received a Remy Award from the Theatre League for "Outstanding Contributions to South Florida Theatre", and this past season was awarded the prestigious George Abbott Award by the members of South Florida's arts, entertainment and media professions for "significant contributions to the artistic life and cultural development of greater Miami, Fort Lauderdale and the Palm Beaches." Adler studied Drama at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, and graduated from the Film Department at New York University.


JAMES JOYCE (1882-1941) revolutionized the form, structure and content of the novel. Born in Dublin, he left in 1902 to spend most of his life as a writer in exile in Paris, Trieste, Rome and Zurich. On a return visit, he fell in love with Nora Barnacle, who became his companion and the mother of his two children. Joyce then continued living on the Continent, supporting himself by teaching and through patronages. His writings include Chamber Music (1907), Dubliners (a collection which includes The Dead, 1914), A portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916), Exiles (1918), Ulysses (1922), Pomes Penyeach (1927) and his masterpiece, Finnegans Wake (1939).


RICHARD NELSON (Book) has authored many plays, including Goodnight Children Everywhere (Playwrights Horizons, RSC), The General From America (RSC, Milwaukee Rep), New England (RSC, Manhattan Theater Club), Misha's Party (c-written with Alexander Gelman for the RSC and the Moscow Art Theatre), Columbus and the Discovery of Japan (RSC), Two Shakespearean Actors (RSC, Lincoln Center, Tony nomination for Best Play), Some Americans Abroad (RSC, Lincoln Center, Olivier Award nomination for Best Comedy), Sensibility and Sense (American Playhouse), Principia Scriptoriae (RSC, MTC, London Time Out Award). He has written numerous adaptations and the screenplay for the film Ethan Frome. He is an Honorary Associate Artist of the RSC and lives in upstate New York.

Film/TV: Who Bombed Birmingham (Granada); Pentecost, The Hanging Gale, Loving, Ballykissangel (BBC); Twelfth Night (Renaissance/Fine Line); Waking Ned Devine (Fox Searchlight); David Copperfield (Hallmark).


Dr. JEFFREY HODGSON (Music Director) is Assistant Professor of Piano at Miami's New World School of the Arts, in charge of both the college and high school piano programs. He studied at St. Olaf College, Hartt School of Music and the University of Florida and earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Miami. He has accompanied and toured with singers from the Minnesota Opera, Connecticut Opera and New York City Opera. Dr. Hodgson is a faculty member of the University of Miami's Performing Arts Institute and has worked with the Gold Coast Opera company, the Producing Guild (Hartford) and appeared in Square One at TheaterWorks (Hartford).


BARBARA FLATEN (Choreographer) is thrilled to be making her debut with GableStage and the opportunity to work alongside Joe Adler on this production. Babs has been resident choreographer of The Actors' Playhouse for the past six years and has received Carbonell Awards for her work on West Side Story and Joseph...Dreamcoat. Past acting credits: Evita, You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, Pajama Game, Brigadoon, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Steel Pier have all received Carbonell Nominations for Best Choreography. Directing credits: Leader of the Pack and Red Hot and Cole and next summer she will be returning to California to direct the Frank Sinatra musical, My Way. Choreographic credits outside the Miracle Theatre: Gypsy (Parker Playhouse), The Fantastiks and Nothing Less Than Love (Hollywood Playhouse), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (premiere at the Miami Shores Theatre), A Chorus Line (Stage Door), and Godspell (Sierra Rep.Theatre). Babs has also choreographed for Cunard, Silver Seas, Premiere and Regency Cruise Lines. For Katelyn and Carolyne.


RICH SIMONE (Set Design/Scenic Artist) is thrilled to return to GableStage for his sixth production in three years. His past work here includes: This Is Out Youth, Tape, Adam Baum & the Jew Movie, Mindgame, and Popcorn - which garnered him a Carbonell nomination and a Curtain Up award for Best Scenic Design. During the three years since his move from Key West to Miami, Rich has amassed an enviable body of work, a small sampling of which includes: The Legacy at New Theatre, Pump Boys and Dinettes at the Hollywood Playhouse, Winter Shorts and two seasons of Summer Shorts for City Theatre, That Sound You Hear at Fort Lauderdale Players, Bed and Breakfast for the Key West Theatre Festival. Rich also directed, designed and performed in the Miami Premiere of Pageant at the Shores Performing Arts Theatre, where he has recently been appointed Artistic Director. Rich thanks the entire South Florida Theatrical community for their continued support, and Jack for unerring patience.


MIKE MARTIN (Lighting Design) has worked with Miami Dade Community College since 1975. He has been a member of United Scenic Artists since 1979. Professional credits at Coconut Grove Playhouse include the lighting design for Cyrano de Bergerac and The Shadow Box (directed by Joseph Adler) for which he received a Carbonell Award. Mike was also nominated for a Carbonell for his lighting design of Shenandoah at the Burt Reynolds Dinner Theater and for Strange Snow at GableStage (when it was the Florida Shakespeare Theatre), where he also did the set and lighting design for Simpatico and last season lit Tape at GableStage.


ANNE TOEWE (Costume Designer) returns this season to GableStage for this production. Since moving to South Florida, she has designed for New Theatre, Florida Atlantic University, Palm Beach Atlantic College, Hollywood Playhouse, Mill Mountain Theatre, as well as New World School of the Arts. Previously Ms. Toewe lived in NYC where she assisted the costume designers on such Broadway productions as Grease, Cats, Victor/Victoria, and Sunset Boulevard. Some of her South Florida credits include Angels in America, The Woman in Black, Clarence Darrow, My Fair Lady, The Man Who Came to Dinner, Theda Bara and The Frontier Rabbi, as well as numerous commercials and music videos. Ms. Toewe holds a Master's degree in Costume Design from Tulane University and serves on the Steering Committee of United Scenic Artist local 829. She is also a member of Women of the Motion Picture Industry. Anne would like to thank Joe for giving her this opportunity to "commune" with her Irish relatives.


DANIEL LEVAIN (Stage Manager) has been devoting every ounce of energy in his body to his jealous mistress the theater for the past 11 years. Having worked in nearly every facet of production, he is happy to find himself in south Florida and at GableStage. Daniel has served as stage manager for last season's MindGame, The Blue Room, Citizen Tom Paine, and Adam Baum and the Jew Movie. Before joining GableStage, Daniel worked as an actor and stage manager in the Kansas City area, performing or managing productions such as West Side Story and Alice in Wonderland. Daniel would like to extend his profound gratitude to Joseph Adler for the opportunity, to his family for understanding, and to his friends for their support.


OSVALDO PALACIOS (Technical Director) has enjoyed an active career in film, television and theatre. He began his career in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he acted as director, dancer and choreographer. In South Florida, Palacios has worked for The Hispanic Theater League, Area Stage, FLA/BRA, Lenny Miller Productions, Channel 23, International Hispanic Theater Festival and La Salle High School in the capacity of stage manager, technical director, coordinator and teacher. This is his fourth season as resident Technical Director at GableStage.


Thomas Kelly, Jr. (Violinist) is a junior at New World School of the Arts, College/Conservatory, Music Division.


Peter Gwynn-Sackson (Cellist) is a Senior in High School at New World School of the Arts, Music Division.
