JOSEPH ADLER (Director/Producing Artistic Director) continues his fourth season as
Artistic Director of GableStage with this production. Previously, he directed on many local
stages, including Coconut Grove Playhouse, New Theatre, Area Stage, Hollywood Boulevard Theatre, Players
Theatre, Ruth Foreman Theatre, Florida Shakespeare Theatre, City Theatre (Summer Shorts),
Hollywood Playhouse and Shores Performing Arts. At GableStage he directed Skylight, Of Mice and Men,
Full Gallop, Psychopathia Sexualis, Closer, Killer Joe, This is Our Youth, Arms and the Man, Side
Man, Popcorn, Tape, The Real Thing, Adam Baum and the Jew Movie, Citizen Tom Paine, The Blue Room,
Mindgame, Boy Gets Girl, James Joyce's The Dead, Edward Albee's The Play About the
Baby and A Lesson Before Dying.
Active in South Florida's film and theatre community for many years, Adler has directed hundreds of
innovative television commercials and industrial films. His work has won many awards, including the Clio.
Other directorial credits include several independent feature films, a video version of the Broadway hit
comedy "Doubles",
and a cable TV series. He has received ten nominations (most recently for Closer, Killer Joe
an Popcorn at GableStage), and twice won the Carbonell Award for Best Director. He also
received a Remy Award from the Theatre League for "Outstanding Contributions to South
Florida Theatre", and this past season was awarded the prestigious George Abbott Award by the members
of South Florida's arts, entertainment and media professions for "significant contributions to the
artistic life and cultural development of greater Miami, Fort Lauderdale and the Palm Beaches." Adler
studied Drama at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, and graduated
from the Film Department at New York University.
RUSSELL LEES (Author) studied playwriting under Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott. His play Nixon's Nixon was transferred Off-Broadway after its initial run at the MCC Theatre in NY. It went to the prestigious Edinburgh Festival in the summer of 1999, where it won a Fringe First Award. A critically acclaimed production played London's West End last summer, and other international festivals. Mr. Lees has had several plays produced in his native Salt Lake City, as well as in Los Angeles and Boston. These include The Case of the Blue Narcissus, The Shepherd's Play, The Foggiest Notion, Monday Night Football and Lost Scene From 'Cyrano'. Mr. Lees also works in the CD-ROM multimedia industry and recently served as writer and Creative Director for The Dark Eye, an interactive game based on the tales of Edgar Allan Poe.
RICH SIMONE (Set Design/Scenic Artist) is thrilled to return to GableStage for his sixth production in three years. His past work here includes: This Is Our Youth, Tape, Adam Baum & the Jew Movie, Mindgame, Popcorn - which garnered him a Carbonell nomination and a Curtain Up award for Best Scenic Design, and James Joyce's The Dead. During the four years since his move from Key West to Miami, Rich has amassed an enviable body of work, a small sampling of which includes: The Legacy at New Theatre, Pump Boys and Dinettes at the Hollywood Playhouse, Winter Shorts and two seasons of Summer Shorts for City Theatre, That Sound You Hear at Fort Lauderdale Players, Bed and Breakfast for the Key West Theatre Festival. Rich also directed, designed and performed in the Miami Premiere of Pageant, and directed and performed in Falsettos at the Shores Performing Arts Theatre, where he is in his first season as Artistic Director. Rich thanks the entire South Florida Theatrical community for their continued support, and Jack for unerring patience.
MIKE MARTIN (Lighting Design) has worked with Miami Dade Community College since 1975. He has been a member of United Scenic Artists since 1979. Professional credits at Coconut Grove Playhouse include the lighting design for Cyrano de Bergerac and The Shadow Box (directed by Joseph Adler) for which he received a Carbonell Award. Mike was also nominated for a Carbonell for his lighting design of Shenandoah at the Burt Reynolds Dinner Theater and for Strange Snow at GableStage (when it was the Florida Shakespeare Theatre), where he also did the set and lighting design for Simpatico. Last season he lit Tape and James Joyce's The Dead at GableStage.
MICHAEL J. HOFFMAN (Music/Sound Design) is an award-winning composer, arranger and producer with over 30 years experience in South Florida. His score for the documentary film, Heroes Espanos, garnered an Emmy nod. He has also won numerous Clios, Addies and other industry awards. Originally from Philadelphia and New York, Hoffmann's composing talent ranges from classical orchestration to jazz fusion to whatever you can think of. He designed the music and sound for A Lesson Before Dying at GableStage. Michael owns MH Productions, Inc., a post-production recording studio in Fort Lauderdale.
DANIEL LEVAIN (Stage Manager) is proud to be a part of such an exciting theatrical company. Past stage management credits for GableStage include A Lesson before Dying, Edward Albee's The Play About the Baby, James Joyce's The Dead, Boy Gets Girl, Mindgame, The Blue Room, Citizen Tom Paine, and Adam Baum and the Jew Movie. Daniel came to GableStage by way of Kansas, where he worked both on and off stage in various capacities and venues. Daniel would like to extend his profound gratitude to Joseph Adler for the opportunities he has provided, and to his family and friends for their unconditional support.
OSVALDO PALACIOS (Technical Director) has enjoyed an active career in film, television and
theatre. He began his career in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he acted as director, dancer and
choreographer. In South Florida, Palacios has worked for The Hispanic Theater League, Area Stage, FLA/BRA,
Lenny Miller Productions, Channel 23, International Hispanic Theater Festival and La Salle High School in
the capacity of stage manager, technical director, coordinator and teacher. This is his fourth season as
resident Technical Director at GableStage.
