Daniel Lewis, well known in this community for his contribution to the growth of dance in South Florida. He will give an intimate talk about the history of dance through his eyes from 1948 to the present-day. He was the founding dean of dance at the New World School of the Arts, and president of Miami Dance Futures for 24 years. Before moving to Miami from New York City to become the first dean of dancer; he was a well-known dancer with the José Limón dance company; a choreographer with his company, Daniel Lewis Dance; a repertory company; a nationally known teacher; assistant director of the dance program at the Juilliard school; and author. Today he holds a place in the history of dance around the world.
He will tell stories of his early days with CBS television, the Yiddish Theater, dancing with companies in NY and his long association with the José Limón Company. He will talk about his experiences working with Rudy Nureyev, American Ballet Theater, the Royal Danish and Swedish Ballet, The Batcheva Dance Company in Israel. He will talk about his teaching at The Juilliard School, and his mission, in creating the dance program at the New World School of the Arts for 24 year. He will share videos, photos of these intimate experiences through out his life.
This will be a heart-warming window into the life of a young male dancer from
New York. Who defied the odds of a young boy in Brooklyn, making it out alive, to find a rewarding career in dance.
